Fish Curry

Thursday, May 7, 2009

This is a south Indian style fish curry. My friend Swetha's mom came down from India last year and i got hold of her asking her to teach me authentic south Indian fish curry. I asked her to come down to my place  make it and show me so that i become perfect in it. It tasted really delicious. Few days later i tried it all by myself and it turned out to be a pure disaster. I called up aunty and asked her to come down to my place and let me know where did i go wrong and what do i do now with that curry. She came down and she was like i have added too much of tamarind pulp and so she asked me to add more coriander powder and keep it on low flame for longer time so that the bitterness  reduces. Finally,  it turned out to be good. And the next time on this curry tasted even more better to me as i became perfect in this. Here goes the recipe..

Ingredients :

1 1/2 lb White fish fillet ( i use salmon but any other fish will also do)
2 tbs shredded coconut
1/2 tbs garlic ginger paste
1 tbs red chilly powder
1 pinch turmeric powder
1/2 tbs coriander powder
Oil fir cooking
1 big onion
3 green chillies
1 tomato
1/4 teaspoon methi seeds
1/2 tbs tamarind pulp mixed in 1 cup of water (if you are fresh tamarind then soak walnut -sized ball of tamarind in half cup of water)
Coriander leaves
Salt to taste.

Step 1 : Cut the fish into small pieces as shown below.

Step 2 : In a bowl add garlic ginger paste, chilly powder, salt, coriander powder and shredded coconut . Take each piece of fish ( so that the fish does not turn into many small pieces) mix in it and keep that aside.

Step 3 : Grind onion and green chilies into a fine paste.

Step 4 : Take a wide pan heat oil in it and add methi seeds in it.

Step 5 : Later add chopped tomatoes in it and let it cook for 5-7 Min's on low flame.

Step 6 : Once that is done add the grounded paste in it. Cook it well on low flame till the raw smell vanishes.

Step 7 : Then add the tamarind water in it including salt, red chilly powder, tumeric powder and coriander powder.Once the gravy boils add the fish pieces in it. Cook it on low flame for minimum 20 -25 Min's. Don't stir it as the fish pieces might get chopped . So keep moving the dish occasionally.

Step 7 : Garnish it with coriander leaves . Serve it with plain rice or rotis.
